I brought over my friend Zahmar over for Easter just to have fun and play some games, but somehow he ended up for supper. As we were talking, we somehow began to talk about religion and my lack-of-religious beliefs.

After it was all said and done, he admitted to himself that he was leaning toward agnosticism. He said his god quota was going to church once every year to make him feel better.

He understood. When I talked, he knew exactly what I meant. He wasn't tip-toeing around questions and avoiding the inevitable answer, but I didn't expect it. Nobody ever changes their mind. Never.

He was an open mind. Mad props.

P.S. The irony of this happening on Easter is not lost on me.

Keep in mind to replace the word "faith" with "ugga" as that is what they are talking about.

The conclusion of my first debate was that the Christian god is illogical and, therefore, impossible to know for certain IF you chose Conclusion D. That means that one has no way to know his motives or beliefs.

Now, if the Christian god is unknowable, what is the difference between him and all the different gods throughout time? Absolutely nothing. The different names, the rules, beliefs, promises of heaven, rebirth, etc. Those differences are meaningless because no one has any idea what the Christian god is like.

Now, why do people believe in god(s)? Faith. In short, believers don't have any evidence or reason to believe, but they just do. Alternatively, this also points out that the Christian god is unknowable as all religions have the same lack of evidence for their god's existance.

Propositions:

A) The Christian god is illogical and therefore, impossible to know.
B) Believing without evidence or a reason to is a reasonable thing to do.

Christians regect Proposition A and accept Proposition B. Christians are claiming that THEIR god is the true god. They are claiming to know god so they cannot accept Proposition A. If they do, they are agnostics rather than Christians.

If they don't reject Proposition A, then I will refer to my previous argument.

Let's get another thing straight. Faith is believing without evidence. That's it. It is NOT believing in something higher than yourself. If one rejects faith, they are NOT egotistical, just scientific. It isn't a bad thing to reject faith. They are just skeptical about everything, even the supernatural. Somehow, the idea of faith has been construde into a virtue. It is not.

If one believes in faith, it should hold empirically. That means a person should believe in everything around them that doesn't have any evidence of existing. If that person does not, they are only having faith in things they already assume to be true and circular logic follows after that. The point I am trying to make is WHY do you have faith in your PARTICULAR god? You have just as much reason to have faith in Thor or Zeus than any modern religion so how did you decide?

This is the only reason for me and Spotie's hang-ups during our talks. It is the sole strand that binds theists to their beliefs. There is no way to sever such a strand, no matter how thin it is, since theists only have faith in things they already believe. It is faulty, circular logic.

They have faith because they believe it. Why do they believe in it? They believe because they have faith. Why do they have faith in it? They have faith because they believe it. Why do they believe in it? They believe because they have faith. Why do they have faith in it? They have faith because they believe it. Why do they believe in it? They believe because they have faith. Why do they have faith in it? And on and on and on.

Imagine a world that would be created and nurtured by an all-knowing, all-powerful, all-loving god.

First of all, an all-loving god would create a paradise where no one dies or at least not for eternity. Perhaps it would be a rebirthing process to keep life fresh and interesting. Death could not be caused by bodily harm, but from a predictable, expected age.

Secondly, even if there were death, there would be no aging. People would physically mature no longer than 30 years old.

Thirdly, there would be no sickness or famine. In fact, there would be no such thing as hunger since our bodies would have limitless energy.

Fourthly, such a god would be in constant contact with his creations. He would live among his sole creation like a true parent would. In such a world, there would be no religion. There wouldn't be the need for a belief in a god if the god was such an obvious truth.

Fifthly, there would be no need for plants, animals, bacteria, or any other life forms except humans. There would be nothing that humans needed from other life forms to survive: Energy or companionship. Everything around them would just be beautiful scenery that stirs the soul.

Sixthly, the universe would only go as far as eyesight would allow. There would be no point in having such a huge universe if we are the only reason for it's creation.

Seventhly, there would be no heaven or hell. Such a concept wouldn't exist. Earth, itself, would be the heaven and everyone would be born in it.

Eightly, there would be no rules. There would be no need for them. There are no possessions to steal and no life to take.

Ninethly, science and the god would go hand in hand. Such a god would explain what methods and laws he used to create the universe. Even if he didn't, he would not explain things contradictory to science.

Tenthly, there would be no way to fall from grace. There would be nothing one could do to upset, anger, or betray such a god in any way. He would know everything well in advance and wouldn't care. That includes eating a peice of fruit.

1) An atheist claims nothing. They lack the belief in a deity. No burden of proof is necessary.

2) An agnostic theist claims that they believe in a deity that is unknown.

Fair enough. Such a claim is small, but the burden of proof is still on the agnostic to come up with a reason why a deity exists. (Even though I am an atheist, this is a viewpoint I respect)

3) A theist claims that they know that existance was created and that their personal deity is responcible.

That is a big claim. Such a claim would require big evidence, no? The burden of proof is on the theist to prove why a deity exists as well as prove why their PERSONAL deity exists.

If the theist can only prove the existance of a deity, then they have failed their burden of proof. Such evidence would be sufficiant for an agnostic theist, but not for a theist.

Since my first post is running out of comment room, I thought I would recap. Here are the conclusions of the debate.

A) A god like the Christian god exists and everyone has and will always go to heaven.
B) A god(s) different than the Christian god exists.
C) No god(s) exist.
D) A god like the Christian god exists and is immune from all logic.

I, personally, hope it's option A. That would be pretty sweet.

Option D is quite strange, but I understand how one could believe it. If you think that is the correct conclusion, then you just believe in an all-knowing, all-powerful, all-good god - NOT the Christian god. There is no way to comprehend ANY book that could be written or divined by such a god. So what makes you a member of that religion? Nothing.

If option D is correct, different religions are indistinguishable. Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and any others could all be equally verifiable.

For example, the idea that Jesus is the son of God is the central tenent of Christianity. The central tenent for Muslims is Muhammad. Both of these are only known because of their respective holy books. If you say that their god is immune from logic, then their holy books are immune from logic as well. If you say that they are being logical here, then how do you know? You don't. And the same goes for all the different rules in the holy books. So what makes you a Christian or a Muslim if your central tenent could be wrong for all you know?

I know what you are thinking. "You don't have to know! Just have faith". Alright, then what about this verse?

"If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him...then all the men of his town shall stone him to death." Deut 21:18, 21

or

"Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says." Corinth. 14:34

Are these logical or illogical? Again, how do you know? You don't. Have faith?

Now, onto faith. The idea of faith is not smart at all. Here, I'll prove it.

There is a giant etheral Goomba about to squash you into oblivion. Are you running away? If so, you are dumb. If you didn't, then why not? Is it because you have no reason (evidence) to believe that a Goomba is about to squish you? Good job.

"But those are silly, mythologic beings! Of course, I don't believe them!". Then you just don't have faith do you? You think that faith is only good if it's applied to gods or something?

The same line of thinking can be applied to anything: Dragons, goblins, hobbits, the tooth fairy, Santa Clause, the Spagetti Monster, and even gods themselves because NONE of them have a shred of evidence for existing.

Now, if you have come to the conclusion that God is logical when talking about Jesus or his laws that we agree with, but illogical on anything we don't agree with AND that faith in god is good, but not in anything else, then you are cherry picking. There is no getting through to you. You believe in the dogmatic principles instilled into you and there is nothing I can do or say to convince you otherwise. You no longer care if you are right or wrong, just that you believe for the sake of believing.

Both my mom and Alex are concerned for me since they believe I will be damned forever in hell fire. Poppycock, I say! Behold!

Propositions:

A) The Christian god is all-knowing. He knows everything about everything. He knows what every atom in existance is doing. He knows every thought and feeling. He knows every decision one will ever make and, ultimately, knows if one is going to heaven or hell.
B) The Christian god is all-powerful. He can do anything the mind can imagine and more.
C) The Christian god is all-good. He is perfect. He is the embodiment of all that is good and just. He is without sin.

Argument:

1) Since the Christian god is all-knowing, he knew if I will go to heaven or hell before I was born. He knew if I will go to hell before existance was even created. Therefore, there is no such thing as free will. There is no decision that will change my fate that the Christian god did not know in advance. If he did not know in advance, then he would not be all-knowing, which contradicts Proposition A.
2) Since the Christian god is all-good, he would never create a soul that he knew was going to hell. If he did, then he would be evil, which contradicts Proposition C.

Conclusion:

Either A, B, C, or D.

A) A god like the Christian god exists, and all souls in the past, present, and future have and will go to heaven. That includes Hitler and Stalin as well as Ghandi and The Buddha.
B) A god(s) different than the Christian god exists.
C) No god(s) exist.
D) The Christian god exists, but is immune to all logic and understanding. He can say, do, or believe anything contradictory and still have the attributes of Proposition A, B, and C. Anything expressed or divined by God is also unknowable including the Bible.

Take your pick, Christians.

Is it just me or does the Christian idea of Heaven seem so insane? First off, where is it? The only realistic option would have to be an alternate universe or dimension. If people really believe that Heaven is in the clouds, feel free to make fun of them.

So how do you enter heaven? Through the pearly gates. Wait, wait...GATES? Why does heaven even need gates? I suppose heaven is in a bad neighborhood.

And lastly, heaven is described as a big party with feasting, dancing, singing, etc. There is a lavish city where angels and God himself resides. *sighs* So you are telling me that the creator of everything makes something that boring and uncreative? A god can create more than you could ever imagine. Fire that freezes, ice that burns, buildings made out of mercury, elements you've never witnessed, colors you've never saw, solar winds, supernovas, and holograms. All would be possible through God. Keep in mind that my suggestions are from a mere human. Imagine what heaven would really be like from a all-knowing God. It would be fucking nuts. It would be so nuts that I can't even comprehend it.

Isn't it funny how heaven has the same exact architecture of when The Bible was written? They didn't describe skyscrapers in heaven. And isn't it funny how no modern inventions were mentioned? No electricity, no motorcycles, no refridgerators, no heaters. Just gates. I suppose heaven wouldn't need electricity, refridgerators or heaters. I guess things would use infinite batteries, food would never spoil, and it would always stay 70 degrees. But don't you think they would write that shit down as well!?

Whoever wrote the descriptions of heaven failed epicly. He was so fucking vague. You would think he would write down a little more details of the Kingdom of God. But no...we only get gates. Thanks a lot.

Well, it's official. Religion is very close to ruining my relationship with Alex. God Damn. Appearently, dispite her demeanor, she wants a very religious lifestyle for her future family and I refuse to have my children be indocrinated in any religion...at least to not the extreme she wants.

She is calling for baptism, church every Sunday, and boarding a Catholic school. Fuck that shit. My kids (if and when I have them) will not go to any school that denies the teaching of evolution. I want a middle school, not a middle ages school. Secondly, church every sunday is way too much. I mean, who has the time? And would I have to come too? Fuck that noise. So how did religion get to be so damn important that two people can't be together because of it? Is that what Jesus would want? First off, she has admitted that the only "evidence" of her belief is that she feels God is real and Jesus is the savior. That's it? That's the only strand attaching herself to Christianity? And I mean, what are the odds that the belief she was indoctrinated in just happens to be the one she "feels" is real? That's got to be like one in a fucking million! I mean, there have been hundreds or thousands of religions of the past and present, but she just happens to feel the one that she has been born into! Talk about coincidence!

She criticizes me for claiming that Christianity is just another religion; no different than the Greek gods, Wiccan, or Islam. Is that wrong? If she was born in Saudi Arabia, she would be just as devout a Muslim as she is a Catholic. She denies that, but I know she is full of shit. Religion is just like Patriotism. Both are completely stupid to be proud of since the only reason you feel a particular way is based on what society you grew up in.

Anyway, so imagine there is an all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-good god. He knows everything that did, is, can, and will happen at the very instant of his/her/it's existance. He knows every choice, action, and thought you will make. He knows if you are going to hell or heaven before you were even created. If you want to understand that sort of mind bending being, you better be thinking scientifically. That is the only way to get inside his head. If he is a god, he should be applying some powerful logic and reason to his decisions and to assume he has the temperment and thinking of a 10 year old is flat out blasphamy.

And through all this, she says that I am the one that is blind and unwilling to remove the blindfold from my eyes. That is the TOTAL OPPOSITE. I remember believing in Christianity and I am so glad those days are over. I also remember believing in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy and I am also glad that those days are over. Santa is like some cruel joke. I get that parents want to put some wonder into a kid's mind, but to create a global conspiracy to make kids believe in a make belief character with such conviction is very scary. Think about it. The parents are in on it, the friends are in on it, the family is in on it, and the corporations are in on it. Hell, even the god damn POSTAL SERVICE is in on it! The entire Christian community is feeding kids an innocent lie, but will ultimately bring the child to tears when he meets reality. It happened to me. I'm sure it happened to you.

Don't worry, I'm not bitter about it. It's not even a big deal, but just think about if people did a conspiracy that unicorns are real and if you ride one, you get sent on a magical trip to Wondertopia. You would believe that shit if you were a kid and the whole world was in on it. Scary stuff. It's the same with religion. The whole world is in on it, but there is no shocking revelation to prove it false. You can't catch your father putting presents under the Christmas tree on this one. So we talked it out and we are still together. She will need some time to trust me again, but I'm still happy with how things turned out. I was just being stupid.

So I just got off the phone and me and Alex kinda broke up after almost 11 months of being together. The reason was because I have been having second thoughts of the future of us. To think I will only want to be with her for the rest of my days seems unlikely. I mean, could you only have one relationship for life?

So I asked for a break after the topic came up. She said "Fuck you. You won't hold me here for your convience". She was crying on the phone and I wasn't. So I want some advice from all of you reading this. Let me set the scene first.

I've been going to school for a week and I've noticed other girls and have even been setting myself up to sit by them. Why? Back up, I suppose. Just in case things go wrong. One girl I noticed made me jokingly say "I think I'm going to have to cheat on Alex" at my job.

Now I like being with Alex. She's pretty, she's kind've funny, and we generally have fun. But does that make a relationship? I call her before I go to bed, but I don't always think about her that much. What is the sign that you really are in love? Am I just incapable of love?

I'm just really confused about how to know what I feel. I can't tell if I really love her or I am just afraid of being alone. I'll post more as I think about them. For now, I'm going to bed.
